Tessy Plastics, NY, contract manufactures 100 different light switch plates for a company that supplies major retail home improvement companies. Each switch plate must have a UPC label. The plates are packed into display trays. Display Trays are packed into cases. Cases are palletized. Each step requires a new label.
Using pre-printed labels, Tessy frequently experienced labeling errors..the wrong label on the product, display, case or pallet.
Corner Office designed a middleware application that drives four desktop SATO printers from a single PC. The middleware interface allows the operator to scan their badge and the job ID. A sample label is then sent to each printer (product, display, case and pallet). The operator matches the labels to the job order.
Each printer then presents the required label as needed. For example: If the display holds 24 plates, then the operator first is presented with 24 UPC product labels - one at a time - after the previous UPC bar code is scanned to insure readability. When 24 product labels are printed, the tray labels are then presented to the operator.
Production activity is automatically tracked by operator, job and product.
