BD Biosciences produces reagents for a variety of immunocytometry
applications. The reagents are manufactured in small
refrigerated vials. When reagents are ordered, an operator
picks the desired vials. Each vial has a label with a
Datamatrix 2D bar code that defines the sub-assembly and lot
number. These vials must then be over-labeled with specific
product information based on the order.
Corner Office developed a complex "Middleware" application to support
an intricate rotary table based print and apply system built by
ACCRAPLY, Canada. The BD Bio SAP system FTPs orders to the
PC at the rotary table. The operator selects the desired
order, puts the associated vials on a conveyor and starts the
rotary table. At the first station, the vial is spun to
allow a camera to locate and read the 2D bar code. The bar
code data is sent to Middleware for a "look up" of the
subassembly number in a database table. Middleware sends the
associated label data to the print and apply unit and to a vision
system camera. Once the label is applied, the vision system
checks to see if the label data agrees with the information sent
and sends the result back to Middleware. The Middleware application
interfaces with the rotary table PLC, the
label printer/applicator, the vision system and the network.
